Catamaran Refresher and Endorsement Course OSS 114

For Experienced Sailors Desiring to Transition to Catamarans or Refresh Catamaran Skills

This advanced course OSS 114 is for sailors who have cruising experience on monohulls or catamarans and hold US Sailing Bareboat Cruising or equivalent certification obtained within the past five years. Fast-paced and comprehensive, OSS 114 is designed for those who want to:

  • Refresh skills learned on a 40’-50’ monohull
  • Transition from a monohull to a cruising catamaran
  • Refresh and enhance their skills aboard a catamaran
  • Prepare for chartering or purchasing their own big cruising boat

Monohull Refresher Course OSS 111

For Experienced Sailors Desiring to Refresh or Improve Monohull Skills

This advanced course OSS 111 is for sailors who have cruising experience on monohulls or catamarans and hold US Sailing Bareboat Cruising or equivalent certification within the past five years, and want to:

  • Refresh or improve skills learned on a 40’-50’ monohull
  • The transition from a catamaran to a cruising monohull
  • Prepare for chartering or purchasing their own big cruising monohull yacht

Prepare for Bareboat Chartering*

To participate in either of these Refresher Courses, you must have the skills and ability to sail and maneuver 40’-50’ yachts with confidence. You should also be at ease with chart reading and navigation, anchor types and scope, among other skills that are taught in Offshore Sailing School Live Aboard or Bareboat Charter Cruising Courses. *Starting in January 2024, we are combining the Refresher and Docking courses into one four-day, stay-ashore course. Ask our Sales Associates about that new combination. 

Taught by US Sailing-Certified Instructors

The maximum number of students taught in this OSS 111 or OSS 114 Refresher Course is four students per session, per boat with a certified US Sailing instructor experienced in teaching on large monohulls and catamarans. All those participating in the course will rotate through the tasks and skills, covering these important skills to fully prepare for handling big yachts without hired crew.

  • Short introduction to the course and subjects to be covered
  • Weather as it relates to the area where the course takes place
  • Review boat parts and operations to provide familiarity with all aspects of the boat, including safety
  • Maneuvering under power
  • Pivot turns – forward one engine, reversing second aboard catamarans
  • Use of windward engine when power sailing with mainsail
  • Standard docking alongside
  • Anchoring – single bow, double box
  • Sailing and maneuvering under sail and power
  • Heaving-to
  • Reefing for heavy weather conditions
  • Crew overboard techniques
