Catamaran or Monohull Refresher Course OSS 114

For Experienced Sailors Desiring to Refresh Monohull Skills or Transition to Catamarans

This advanced course OSS 114 is for sailors who have cruising experience on monohulls or catamarans and hold US Sailing Bareboat Cruising or equivalent certification. Fast-paced and comprehensive, OSS 114 is designed for those who want to:

  • Refresh skills learned on a 40’-50’ monohull
  • Transition from a monohull to a cruising catamaran
  • Refresh and enhance their skills aboard a catamaran
  • Prepare for chartering or purchasing their own big cruising boat

Prepare for Bareboat Chartering

To participate in this Refresher Course, you must have the skills and ability to sail and maneuver 40’-50’ yachts with confidence. You should also be at ease with chart reading and navigation, anchor types and scope, among other skills that are taught in Offshore Sailing School Live Aboard or Bareboat Charter Cruising Courses.

21.5 Hours of Non-Stop Big Boat Instruction 

The OSS 114 Refresher Course is a “stay-ashore” course, with accommodations provided at the Westin Cape Coral Resort, or South Seas Island Resort, or Pink Shell Beach Resort in Southwest Florida. For 2.5 days, you will be immersed in learning  aboard an Offshore Sailing School 40’ or larger yachts– Monday and Tuesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. You may depart for home late afternoon on Wednesday or add an extra night and leave the next day. When making travel plans and booking this Refresher Course with an Offshore Sailing School sales associate, arrival should be Sunday, departure late Tuesday or Wednesday (with extra night).

Taught by US Sailing-Certified Instructors

The maximum number of students taught in this OSS 114 Refresher Course is four students per session, per boat with a certified US Sailing instructor experienced in teaching on large monohulls and catamarans. All those participating in the course will rotate through the tasks and skills, covering these important skills to fully prepare for handling big yachts without hired crew.

  • Short introduction to the course and subjects to be covered
  • Weather as it relates to the area where the course takes place
  • Review boat parts and operations to provide familiarity with all aspects of the boat, including safety
  • Maneuvering under power
  • Pivot turns – forward one engine, reversing second aboard catamarans
  • Use of windward engine when power sailing with mainsail
  • Standard docking alongside
  • Med-moor docking both bow-in and stern-in
  • Picking up and securing a mooring
  • Anchoring – single bow, double box
  • Sailing and maneuvering under sail and power
  • Heaving-to
  • Reefing for heavy weather conditions
  • Crew overboard techniques
