We are sorry we had to pospone our 2023 Performance Race Week with renowned UK Sailmakers due to resort marina damages from Hurricane Ian in September 2022. We anticipated hosting Performance Race Week® with expert racing coaches under the leadership of  Adam Loory, General Manager, responsible for international operation,s and John Bennett, President of UK Sailmakers International, the parent company of the worldwide UK Sailmakers group. Stay tuned for future Performance Race Week announcements.

An Unmatched Team of Expert Racing Coaches

Adam Loory, General Manager, UK Sailmakers International

Adam Loory will conduct all the seminars, shoreside and on-water exercises, and be on the race course to cap the week with video critiques.  His first job during high school was teaching sailing and he has been teaching sailors ever since. Adam was as an editor for Sailing World magazine where he taught sailors about racing, he wrote the book “Championship Tactics” with Gary Jobson and Tom Whidden, and at UK Sailmakers he coaches customers and creates instructional articles and videos for the UK Sailmakers website and monthly newsletters. Here is just one example about knowing racing rules. He has also been an on-the-water instructor in man overboard recovery at the Storm Trysail Club’s safety at sea seminars for both adults and juniors.

Lifelong Sailors Who Love to Teach

John Bennett, President, UK Sailmakers International

A lifelong racing sailor, Adam started racing Thistles throughout the Midwest and then became a big boat racer after moving to the east coast in the mid 1980s. Since then he has raced in eight Newport to Bermuda Races, three Caribbean 600s, two Annapolis-Newport races and once in the Sydney Hobart race and Marblehead to Halifax race. He has raced more times than he can count in Block Island Race Weeks, Vineyard Races and Block Island races.  Adam also enjoys ocean cruising. He has cruised Australia, southeast Asia, raced in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, crossed the Indian, Atlantic and North Pacific oceans and is currently preparing his 40-footer for a three-year retirement cruise to Europe and the South Pacific.

John Bennett is helping Adam line up the coaches and will join the coaching team on site. He has worked in the sailmaking business all his life with stints at North, Ullman and UK Sailmakers. Before becoming President of UKI, he owned the UK Sailmakers lofts in San Diego and Mexico; and has also worked for Dimension Polyant sailcloth.  John has raced extensively on the U.S. west coast. He has competed in three TransPacs, two Pacific Cups, two Kenwood Cups, three Chicago Mac races and in multiple major events including Key West Race Week, St. Francis Big Boat Series and MEXORC.  A major part of his job is sailing with his customers and helping them become better racers and sail trimmers.  John currently owns a J/105 that he races in one-design events with his wife. Patience and full explanations are just some of his coaching strengths and he is not above learning from those he sails with.  At 2023 Performance Race Week® social events or on the race course ask John to tell you his Carl Eichenlaub story from a St. Francis Big Boat Series race.

More About UK Sailmakers International

Butch Ulmer watches participants preparing a Soling class sailboat at one of Steve Colgate’s Race Weeks on Captiva Island, FL in the eighties.

Founded in 1946 in New York City as Ulmer Sails, UK Sailmakers International is one of the world’s most established groups of sail makers with 50 lofts and service centers all over the world. Based in Portchester, NY, the company uses the most advanced design technologies and materials. Each loft is owned by local sailors who know the needs of their sailing communities.  With computer programs UK developed for sail design and construction, sailors across the country know they can buy the same fast sails from any UK loft. The UK Sailmakers website provides monthly newsletters with informative educational programs and quizzes, and a ever growing collection of Learning Videos and Articles and Safety at Sea Videos –  augmenting the many hours their coaches spend on the water helping competitive sailors get to the finish line first.

Charles “Buster” Ulmer opened the first Ulmer Sails loft and his son, Charles “Butch” Ulmer, took over the business in 1968. Butch is a great friend of Steve and Doris Colgate, and like the Colgates, he still goes to the office every day.  When Steve started race weeks in 1967 on Olympic class Solings on Grand Bahamas Island in the Bahamas, Butch was one of the first “guest expert” coaches and continued to participate every year as a guest expert coach at Steve Colgate’s Performance Race Weeks when the program moved to Nassau and Great Exuma (Bahamas); Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico; and SW Florida at South Seas Island Resort, where the 2023 event will be held. Butch’s racing career spans a multitude of classes and wins – competing in everything from 12’ dinghies to 84’ ocean racers. His first of 17 Bermuda Races was in 1958 on a US Naval Academy yawl  that had no engine.

On the Leading Edge of Sail Development

Adam Loory’s Soulmates, designed by Rodger Martin, built in 1992 by Eric Goetz, was first in doublehanded class and corrected to first overall in PHRF in 2020 Vineyard Race.

UK Sailmakers has been on the leading edge of sail development since the late ‘40s when Ulmer Sails dominated the Star class and other one-designs like 5.5 Meters, Snipes, Lightnings and Comets. Its involvement with the America’s Cup goes back to 1964. The “K” in UK Sailmakers comes from a time when Olympic Gold medalist and Texas loft owner John Kolius (also a past Performance Race Week® guest expert coach) became a partner for a few years. UK Sailmakers developed the Tape-Drive® sail construction method, the first load-bearing sail technique providing performance and durability, the first to perfect radial-head spinnaker construction, and has been a pioneer of high-performance continuous yarn string sails with it line of Titanium® sails.

Details of what is typically included are shown below. Performance Race Week® is so popular it fills months in advance, so sign up as soon as dates and locaiton are announced!

888-454-7015 ♦ 239-454-1700

Performance Race Week® is a super way to upgrade your racing skills. From Sunday evening through Friday evening, you are immersed in a program designed to give you the confidence and skills to join the winner’s circle.

Plan to arrive Sunday evening in time for the Meet and Greet Orientation party. Monday morning you set sail on Offshore’s fleet of Colgate 26s, learning and racing non-stop in 2 three-hour sessions each of the first four days. Friday morning, you head out again for another on-water coaching session. Then Friday afternoon,  you’re immersed in an intense regatta with the entire fleet vying for line-honors in at least four races for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies.

Performance Race Week® and the Fast Track® to Performance Racing Course which starts three days earlier may be held in Florida or the British Virgin Islands. If you have never raced before, have good sailing skills on keelboats like the Colgate 26 you learn and race on, but have very little racing experience, we ask that you take the Fast Track® to Performance Racing course. Resumes will be required. Performance Race Week® is only for racing sailors who want to expand their sailboat racing skills and knowledge.

There May be a Spectator Boat!

We welcome your guests who want to join you for this fun-filled week, but not participate in the event itself. Guests are invited to the Sunday Welcome Orientation Party, the Beach BBQ, and the Awards Dinner following the Regatta for a nominal per person fee.  While you are learning and working hard with your coach and crew during on-water sessions, one of Offshore Sailing School’s cruising or chase boats may be available to take up to six passengers per session out to watch.  The resort offers plenty of activities for friends and family to enjoy while you learn.

888-454-7015 ♦ 239-454-1700

While sailing, you’re likely to be surrounded by pelicans diving, herons and egrets wading along the shore, ospreys nesting on channel markers . . . and best of all, you might very well be accompanied by dolphins on the racecourse!

Our fleet of race-ready Colgate 26 sailboats are fun and fast to sail. You’ll have lots of open water and wind and wave conditions to challenge and improve your racing skills.

The Colgate 26 is a super lively, fast, comfortable, and safe keelboat that both excites and satisfies. It turns on a dime, accelerates quickly, has sophisticated adjustments not generally found on a 26-footer, and is set up for easy sail trimming and steering.  A coach station behind the helmsperson allows for plenty of room for a busy crew of four to work together as you learn. Expect tons of starts, lots of drills, and practice races to get you tuned up to win.

Here’s what our Performance Race Week® participants have to say:

“This has been a great learning experience and it delivers. With the same skipper (back home) we never finished better than 4th. Yesterday we got a second and 2 firsts!”

John Breyfogle – Countersville, AL

“I’ve attended many courses in 37 years as a Navy pilot and airline pilot. This course and particularly the Offshore instructor were outstanding.”

Tom Corboy – Annapolis, MD

“If you love to go fast and strive to be better, you can’t bet the combination of owning your own Colgate 26 and taking the Performance and Racing classes. They are top notch instructors.”

Phil Weintraub – Hopewell Junction, NY

“I was not comfortable taking the helm during a race until I attended this camp. I have since become quite confident in my driving skills and feel very competitive with the rest of the fleet – hence 3rd place finish in the Marblehead NOODS!”

Shawna Gauthier – Marblehead, MA

“The printed curriculum looked great but it was even more power-packed than I expected. I have waked away with more knowledge and experience than I ever expected. This was a total success.”

Diana Augsburger – Kenmore, NY

“Race Week was absolutely the BEST!!! Many thanks for a wonderful and really educational week. I can’t believe how much I learned, and I loved meeting all the other participants and, of course, our coach.”

Kim Frisbie – Ft. Washington, PA
