Tortola Sailing School in the
British Virgin Islands
At The Moorings in Road Town, Tortola
Since 1973, Offshore Sailing School has been the Official Sailing School for The Moorings, the world’s premier bareboat, power and crewed yacht charter company. Located in Road Town on Tortola, the capital of the British Virgin Islands, The Moorings base is abuzz with sailing and power boating activity year round. Our Learn to Sail, Fast Track to Cruising, and Live Aboard Cruising courses are taught at this location every week of the year. Here you’ll find more than 400 yachts ready for your Tortola sailing vacation adventure and powerboat lessons, all from The Moorings and its sister companies Sunsail and Footloose.
The Mariner Inn and Marina
For Tortola Sailing School’s shore based courses and stays before or after you set sail, The Mariner Inn has simple island-style rooms and suites with marina, garden or harbor view balconies. A swimming pool located by the water’s edge bar is a great place to relax after a day of sailing lessons. When you sail out of the marina, you enter Sir Francis Drake Channel, surrounded by islands with quiet coves, beaches, caves, hiking paths, fun restaurants, and wonderful snorkeling and swimming. All around you’ll see sailors and power boaters enjoying the cruising lifestyle – just as you will too.
“My son and I enrolled in the Fast Track to Cruising course out of Tortola. We were hoping to gain a solid familiarity with bareboat cruising to enable future charters. The entire experience far surpassed our expectations.”

Dining, Shopping and Relaxing
The inviting reception area opens to a landscaped plaza with retail shops and a neat little café. The marina has three restaurants – including a large open dining area next to the pool where island musicians come to play. Charlie’s Bar and Restaurant, named after The Mooring’s founder, Charlie Cary, sits on an airy corner of the marina over the water. Ginny’s (named after Charlie’s wife) is a great place for snacks, coffee, afternoon tea, sandwiches and ice cream. A spa and several shops with everything you need for a superb on-water adventure are right at the base. A gourmet shop and grocery stores are nearby. In the heart of Road Town are a variety of eateries, shops and open-air markets.

At this wonderful location, we teach Learn to Sail and Cruising Courses every week of the year. While other schools put up to 6 people on a boat, Offshore Sailing School never teaches more than four per boat and instructor unless you ask for a Buy the Boat program. Private Couples or Family Courses are also available. Rates vary by season. Call 888-454-7015 or email Sail@OffshoreSailing.com for rates and availability.
At this location you learn on our Colgate 26 sailboats, cruising sailboats, and powerboats provided by The Moorings. The Moorings 50.5 is our primary teaching vessel for our cruising courses. If the 50.5 is fully booked, you may learn aboard The Moorings 43.3 for monohull sailing courses. If you prefer to do your Bareboat Cruising Certification on a catamaran, you can choose a Sunsail 444 or Moorings 4600 for your training. And for powerboaters, we teach on the Moorings 39PC and 47PC too. Courses on The Moorings and Sunsail yachts are evening starts, you get a fun taste of the cruising lifestyle with your first night onboard at the dock rather than in a hotel room. If shore accommodations are desired, standard rooms overlooking the marina are available as well as a limited number of larger suites overlooking the harbor. Please call 888-454-7015 or email Sail@OffshoreSailing.com to get a quote for course options during your desired travel time period.
