Offshore Sailing School is Back in the British Virgin Islands!

Ever since Hurricane Irma roared through the beautiful British Virgin Islands on September 5, 2017, with over 200 mph winds, we anxiously waited for the day when we could announce, “We Are Back!” In December we resumed our very popular Offshore Sailing School Live Aboard Cruising course at The Moorings base on Tortola, on Moorings catamarans and monohulls, and beautiful Scrub Island Resort is hosting our five-day Learn to Sail and Fast Track to Cruising courses. Here are some images they sent us in December 2017, along with some from students enrolled in our first courses back in the BVI in January 2018.

Join Offshore Sailing School in the British Virgin Islands — Become a “BVI Pioneer” and Save 10% on Complete Course Package

Yep, that’s what we’re calling our students who join us back in the BVI in 2018. For a limited time, when you book a Learn to Sail, Fast Track to Cruising, Live Aboard Cruising or Bareboat Charter Cruising Course, you will save 10% on your total BVI Pioneer Package. Please try to be flexible with your dates, especially if you are a single traveling alone. We cannot open a boat unless we have at least two people ready to sign up. And we don’t teach more than four people at a time in our Live Aboard Cruising courses, unless you are a family (of up to six) who want to learn together. We call that our “Buy the Boat Option” and welcome your inquiries if that suits your desires. The BVI Pioneer Package savings of 10% booked on a space available basis for courses that end by December 15, 2018.

Brian Van Leeuwen

Brian Van Leeuwen, Offshore Sailing School’s Caribbean Manager, and BVI Assistant Manager Folkert Jongkind are waiting for you! They and the rest of our BVI team are eager to help you gain the skills and certification for chartering big yachts. All of our BVI sailing Live Aboard Cruising courses are taught aboard Moorings or Sunsail 39’ to 48’ catamarans or monohulls, or Power Catamarans. We’re pleased to announce two brand new Colgate 26 boats are arriving in the BVI any day now for our popular Fast Track to Cruising course, with two days learning on a Colgate 26, before moving onto your cruising boat for the week.

What Will You Find When You Arrive?

The spectacular trade winds and friendly hospitality that so many sailors have loved in the BVI forever. Of course some areas are still hurricane damaged, but there is plenty open now to see and explore. And did we mention the fabulous hospitality, the Painkillers, the Full Moon Parties, and more?  The gorgeous, clear, azure waters surrounding the British Virgin Islands are unparalleled in their beauty and will never change. The usual, steady breeze that teases your hair and caresses your  soul, as you comfortably sail from one island to another, have not changed either. And the friendly islanders who can’t wait for you to return, will be forever grateful for the beautiful BVI they call home.

A Monumental Effort by Charter Companies and the BVI Community

How did we make this happen? We didn’t. It was the dedication of The Moorings and Sunsail team, based in Clearwater, Florida and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, that set about restoring the Wickhams Cay buildings, docks and yachts (that could be restored), while ordering new boats to replace those that were gone. And it was the Scrub Island Resort management team, based in Tampa, Florida that kept their staff working at that beautiful property. While all this has been going on, throughout the islands the resilient people of the BVI have been rebuilding and reopening popular shoreside attractions.

Funds Raised to Support Those Who Live and Work in the British Virgin Islands

We thank the many friends and family who donated to the fund we set up for our BVI employees who suffered losses. Thanks also go to those who booked courses with Offshore Sailing School in September and October 2017, as our company provided another contribution to our Employee Relief Fund from your enrollments. We are humbled and thankful for so many wonderful #CaribbeanComeback efforts, including the BVI Tourism Board’s efforts to support its residents and critical rebuilding efforts through its BVI Recovery Fund. And The Moorings, Sunsail and Scrub Island Resort have also raised funds for their employees through #CaribbeanComeback with a collective goal of $200,000.

How to Get There

The airport on Beef Island (EIS) is open. Daily ferry service between St. Thomas and Tortola, BVI has also resumed. Supermarkets and many restaurants are open on Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke (including Foxy’s and the Soggy Dollar Bar). The list is added to daily.  Our instructors will have all that information when you arrive.
