BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS POWER YACHT BAREBOAT FLOTILLA CHARTER

THE ULTIMATE WINTER CRUISING ADVENTURE IN CARIBBEAN PARADISE

December 3-10, 2022

This exciting power yacht flotilla charter is a wonderful way to explore the incredible British Virgin Islands.  While snow falls in northern climes, you are boating-in-company through a kaleidoscope of aquamarine waters, mooring in sunny harbors with incredible sandy white beaches, enjoying the camaraderie of new friends under the caring leadership of an experienced BVI host.  It doesn’t get better than this!

EASY NAVIGATION, PROTECTED BAYS, INCREDIBLE VISTAS TO EXPLORE

Boating in the British Virgin Islands is incredibly relaxing as you cruise from one island to another. Each day takes you to special stops where you’ll find beachfront and hilltop eateries with outstanding views, the ancient rock formations of The Baths, and coral reefs displaying an amazing array of sea life. No two days are alike. You can do as much as you like – swim and snorkel in warm Caribbean waters off the boat or sandy beaches, explore interesting sites ashore – or lay back with a good book on the spacious decks of your Moorings 514 power cat.

A GUIDED CRUISE WITH  ISLAND INSIDERS

Hosting this cruise is Folkert “Dutch” Jongkind – Offshore’s Caribbean Manager, who will take you to favorite stops you won’t find on your own. Dutch has lived and worked in the British Virgin Islands for more than 10 years, teaching Offshore Sailing School sail and power courses for most of that time. He knows the boats, the islands, the waters better than anyone and can’t wait to greet you at the Moorings base in Road Town, Tortola. Our flotilla fleet is ready for boarding on Saturday, December 3 at noon; and returns to The Moorings base on Saturday, December 10 by 10 a.m. giving most time to get a flight out for home. A complete handbook is sent shortly after you sign up, with lots of details on travel, the boats, the islands, options to stay ashore before and after the cruise and a whole lot more.

THE YACHTS YOU CRUISE ON

This Colgate Sailing Adventures® Flotilla Cruise is on four custom-designed Moorings 514 Power Cats, powered by twin Yanmar 350hp diesel engines. The spacious air-conditioned interior below is centered around a main saloon with panoramic views, lots of space for dining and lounging, a fully outfitted galley and navigation station. The large forward cockpit has a big area to gather in. Accommodations are in four full-sized cabins with en-suite baths.

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS HIGHLIGHTS

The itinerary is discussed at the Meet and Greet party on arrival day, and reviewed at daily morning meetings with the cruise leader. Although it would be impossible to go all of these places in the time allotted, here are some highlights of places you may visit.

THE MOORINGS BASE ON WICKHAMS CAY, ROAD TOWN, TORTOLA

Wickhams Cay is where all The Moorings and Sunsail power and sail yachts are based.  It is about a half-hour ride from the local airport (see more travel information below). The Mariner Inn is located at the base as well as a large swimming pool, several restaurants: shops for provisions, clothing, beach stuff, and gifts. It’s a busy place with a very large harbor; fun to sit with a cool drink and watch all the preparations underway.

COOPER ISLAND

Six nautical miles from The Moorings base is Manchineel Bay. Ashore is Cooper Island Beach Club – a lively resort with restaurant, rum bar, coffee shop, boutique, and lovely outdoor lounge area. The beach bar and lounge face west, making this the perfect place for enjoying a cocktail while watching a stunning Caribbean sunset.

VIRGIN GORDA

Home of the pristine world-famous Baths where you can explore rock formation tunnels, pools and caves is off a day-only anchorage. Follow a pathway leading through giant boulders to Devil’s Bay and the Top of the Baths Restaurant with delightful panoramic views. Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor nearby offers Wi-Fi, fuel, water, ice, groceries, and restaurants accessed by dinghy or taxi. Most cruisers head to North Sound’s excellent overnight anchorages, mooring in Leverick Bay or off the Bitter End. This huge calm water area has several excellent restaurants with live entertainment.

ANEGADA

Sparsely populated and rural, this island is 11 miles long, low, and flat, unlike any of the others. Beyond the palm-lined sandy shores, great snorkeling reefs, and funky beach bars are salt ponds teeming with birds including a flock of pink Caribbean flamingos not far from the anchorages on the western end. Famous for local lobsters, your cruise leader will likely choose one of his favorite spots here for a group dinner.  You can also rent cars, bicycles and scooters or hire a taxi to explore.

TRELLIS BAY, MARINA CAY AND SCRUB ISLAND

As you cruise from island to island, you may spend a night or a day-time stop at one these as they are roughly in the same area. Off Beef Island is Trellis Bay, where you’ll find Aragorn’s Studio artisan market and other stores offering provisions and ice, plus breakfast and BBQ lunch. Trellis Bay Full Moon parties feature fire balls on the water and live entertainment. Across the channel from Trellis Bay is Marina Cay with moorings, an outdoor patio lunch and nearby snorkeling. The Marriott Autograph Scrub Island Resort is across the channel from Beef Island and has a comfortable marina, a fabulous two-tier pool, and restaurants.

GUANA ISLAND

Though private, Guana Island has a nice anchorage, and good snorkeling at Monkey Point. You can also get a little exercise walking the pristine white sand beach up to the high-water mark, then head back to your yacht for a spectacular sunset and  quiet evening of cocktails and dinner aboard.

JOST VAN DYKE

To the north and west of Tortola is Jost Van Dyke, rising high above a turquoise sea. With a population of little more than 200, the island’s character is distinctly rural. Great Harbour is home to the famous Foxy’s Tamarind Bar & Restaurant and Foxy’s boutique. A short walk from Foxy’s is Cool Breeze Cafe, offering Wi-Fi with breakfast and lunch. Further down the beach is Corsair’s with a full menu throughout the day. White Bay, a short cruise from Great Harbour, is a popular day anchorage with a beautiful beach and snorkeling along the reef, plus several open-air restaurants and bars on the beach, including the famous Soggy Dollar Bar.

NORMAN ISLAND

This popular anchorage is on the east side of Flanagan Passage with St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands just across from it to the west. Hilly, scenic, and popular, the waters around Norman Island provide great snorkeling.  Before heading into The Bight to pick up a moorings, two stops are a must: The Caves at Treasure Point, with teeming sea life and purple and orange hued walls; and Pelican Island and The Indians just outside The Bight for more incredible snorkeling. Ashore in The Bight are several fun restaurants.

HOW TO GET TO THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

The preferred way to get to this cruise is to fly into Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) on Tortola via San Juan, Puerto Rico. Flights into Cyril E. King International Airport (STT) in St. Thomas, USVI, require reserving separately and taking a ferry into Road Town Harbour, but lately ferry options have become very limited. We recommend you contact a Moorings in-house flight specialist at 866-649-2003 to book your flights.
