Race-Ready is a two-day racing course, taught on Offshore Sailing School’s fleet of Colgate 26 sailboats, in New York Harbor. This course is only for those who have US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification or can attest to their ability to handle a 26 sailboat on all points of sail. In other words, you need to know how sail, have strong basic skills and are ready to move into competitive sailing techniques. This exciting sailboat racing course is designed for sailors who are interested in competitive sailing and intend to participate in Colgate Offshore Sailing Club races in NY Harbor.

Depending on weather conditions and the learning pace of all those aboard, your course will cover the following:

  • The Performance Pyramid: planning, boat handling, boat speed, strategy/tactics
  • Advanced sail trim
  • Spinnaker set, jibe, douse and control
  • Jibe angles
  • Sail and mast shape and control
  • Reefing techniques and heavy weather management
  • Handling shroud, stay or mast loss
  • Velocity made good
  • Sailing in current, use of ranges
  • Basic racing rules

  • Collision avoidance
  • Taking bearings
  • Crew overboard drills
  • Introduction to racing
  • What a race course looks like
  • Function of race committee
  • Equipment used
  • Flags and other signals

Prerequisite: Colgate Day Sailing Certification or US Sailing Basic Keelboat certification, or sailing skills and knowledge equivalent to the Offshore Sailing School Learn to Sail course

  • 12 hours on-water training, 3 hours classroom instruction
  • Steve Colgate’s Performance Sailing and Racing textbook, published by McGraw-Hill, sent in advance to study if you sign up at least 10 days in advance of start date
  • Colgate Performance Sailing Certification and sticker when you pass the certification test
  • Logbook (or page for logbook if you are a returning Offshore Sailing School graduate)
  • Course diploma
  • Eligibility to join the Colgate Offshore Sailing Club and participate in club racing

 

Days 1 and 2
9:00-12:00 – On-water instruction
12:00-1:30 – Classroom instruction
1:30-2:30 – Lunch (and certification testing during lunch day 2)
2:30-5:30 – On-water instruction (written test continued end of day 2 if need more time)
