Coastal Navigation Course & Navigation Courses
The first step for an
yone serious about cruising sailing is Coastal Navigation. Our Coastal Navigation Course is a four day course taught in a classroom over four consecutive days. Here you will get the foundation you need for safe, knowledgeable sailing with emphasis on using charts. Many sailors and boaters these days rely solely on electronic devices (GPS, chart plotters and the like) all of which are based on navigation principles and fundamentals that we teach in this course. Consider what can happen if your electronics go down, or you experience poor satellite acquisition or reception.
Never taken Navigation Courses?
If you do not know how to keep a “paper trail” – using official navigation charts, compass, dividers and rules – you run the risk of getting nowhere near your destination, or in a whole lot of trouble. This four-day classroom Coastal Navigation format is available select dates in the New York metro area, Florida, at the Chicago Strictly Sail boat shows, and in conjunction with the Coastal Passage Making Course in Florida and the British Virgin Islands. No previous sailing experience is required for this course unless you have chosen to learn while sailing in our Catamaran Live Aboard Navigation course or the Fast Track to Coastal Passage Making course.

In this course you’ll go through the comprehensive US SAILING Coastal Navigation book step by step, learning the skills of traditional piloting with chart, compass, parallel rules and dividers – all provided during the course. You’ll achieve US SAILING Coastal Navigation certification after testing. There is no pre-requisite when taking it solely as a classroom course.
If you are considering long distance cruising, or even shorter overnights, we highly recommend you combine this course with our Coastal Passage Making course in Florida or the British Virgin Islands. You’ll spend the first four days ashore, then hop aboard a 43’ to 50’ cruising boat for real hands-on training in cruising overnight and some distance from land. Of course, there are pre-requisites involved for a Passage Making course and Coastal Navigation certification is one of them.
