A very special way to make new friends

New York Sailing Club | Offshore SAiling ClubThe Offshore Sailing Club of New York is all about having fun . Our large fleet of award-winning Colgate 26 sailboats are fast, fun, safe, roomy and ergonomically friendly. With sophisticated adjustments and high performance they are as much fun to race as they are to sail around the harbor on a refreshing getaway. Our office, classrooms and meeting room ashore are located in a colorful old Lightship in the marina, where Club members meet to start their day.

Sailing with the New York-New Jersey Sailing Club is shared with other Club members. You'll find an incredible sense of camaraderie throughout the season, with a caring management staff to make sure that everyone's day on the water is the best experience you'll ever have. Lasting friendships occur. Members cruise together in the winter in dream locations with the Offshore Cruising Club at special rates. Avid racers go down to participate together in Offshore Sailing School's North U./Offshore Performance Race Week and come back ready to win when first starting gun sounds at season opening.

The Best Sailing Lessons and Sailing Certification Courses You'll Find

There are sailing schools in the area that claim you can earn certification in two days. Not true, at least not true that you will truly be ready to go out and rent or charter a boat in the 26-30' size range with confidence and lifelong skills. Our three-day Learn to Sail certification course gives you 18 ours of instruction under sail, and 4-1/2 hours in the classroom; as apposed to just 9 hours on the water and a little classroom advertised by others. By the way, Certification is not a legal term. It has no standing with the U.S. Coast Guard or any State or the Federal Government as a "license" to sail.

Passing the certification test for an entry level course helps you realize your goals if the course you take covers everything you need to know to sail a mid-sized sailboat – with a TILLER – confidently and safely. That's what our course does, and we believe you need classroom sessions prior to your sailing sessions to relate what you learn on the boat with what you studied in your textbook. Amen to this, say our graduates who value the three ways people learn which we adhere to: Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic. However, there is another option if you are an Intuitive learner, and that's our Flex Sail option with no classroom sessions.

Performance Sailing and Racing

This is the next step up from the three-day Learn to Sail certification course; and if you sign up immediately after taking Learn to Sail, you get to double your grad discount!  Performance Sailing and Racing taught by our expert instructors (with tons of racing experience under their boat shoes) gives you the skills and confidence to get out there and sail competitively. Even if you don't want to race, you'll learn the nuances of making a boat go fast and a whole host of safety and go-fast procedures that go beyond Learn to Sail.

You'll get 18 hours of instruction and race training under sail, 4-1/2 hours of classroom and you get to race with Club members to try out your new skills. Compare this to two days of workshops offered by other area schools without a set curriculum. No way will you really learn how to make your boat go fast and win in such little time.
