- A whole lot of fun
When Steve Colgate wrote the parameters for a new 26 foot day sailer, he had a long list of features that he wanted incorporated in this new design. These features formed the criteria for the award-winning Colgate 26:
- Stable, safe and unsinkable
- Comfortable in every way - good seats, plenty of room to move around, well-balanced
- The best performance boat of its size without sacrificing comfort, stability, and safety
- Easy to handle in all kinds of weather – including extreme conditions and very light air
- Built to last – with strong fiberglass lay-up and sails that were well shaped but can withstand long hours in the sun
- Maintenance free – no wood except the tiller, with the best fittings (most from Harken)
- Fitted for night sailors with the proper lights and a way to keep the battery charged
- Able to accommodate at least five big sailors in the cockpit without knocking into one another
- Set up for flying a symmetrical spinnaker without any extra props, easily trimmed from the cockpit
- Beautiful to look at with a big stable foredeck for a boat of its size
- Friendly-feeling for beginners, yet challenging for racers
- A hoot to sail!
Nearly 350 Colgate 26s have been sold since it debuted at the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland in 1996. Noted for its safety features, cool lines, sophisticated fittings, ease of handling and high performance – the Colgate 26 has lived up to Steve’s expectations and is truly a joy to sail.
“I raced my Colgate (#284, shoal draft) last night in a sunset sail series with my Dad as crew. The boat went to weather like crazy, and downwind I think I could have taken a nap the helm was so balanced. My Dad who has been on far more boats than I sings the Colgate's praises every time he's on board. This boat is just a joy to sail. I remain a faithful fan.”
Andrew Kraus – Yardley, PA (hull #284)
Even in heavy weather, the Colgate 26 is easy to control and can be sailed comfortably with just the jib or main alone, maintaining balance and the ability to point nearly as well as when fully rigged.
Ergonomic seating in the huge cockpit and rigid “lifelines” provide a feeling of utter safety when the boat heels over. What’s more these rails provide a comforting back-brace to lean against and are convenient to grasp when moving from the cockpit to the deck.
The sleek hull design makes it look like there is no thwartship bulkhead, but indeed there is, providing a nice comfort level for the new sailor and plenty of room aft to sit if someone wants to be out of the way while teaching or observing, or just relax and let others sail the boat.
The self-bailing cockpit and sturdy foam-filled fiberglass construction make this high performance daysailer virtually impossible to sink.
All of these features are explained here and easily attested to by Colgate 26 owners, who just love to sail their boats!
