Offshore Sailing School- Since 1964
Learn sailing from America's #1 Sailing School®
Offshore Sailing School, now in its 50th year, has taught more than 130,000 adults and their children to sail or sail better, providing all levels of Colgate Sailing and US Sailing certification from Basic Keelboat through Offshore Passage Making at seven locations in Florida, New York, New Jersey, and the British Virgin Islands.
Offshore’s 3-day and 5-day Learn to Sail courses are taught on award-winning Colgate 26 keelboats, designed by Offshore’s founder, Steve Colgate, for day-sailing training and racing. The school’s cruising courses – providing Basic Cruising, Bareboat Cruising, Coastal Passage Making and Offshore Passage Making certifications – are taught on 40’ to 50’ monohulls and catamarans. In addition, Offshore Sailing School provides Performance Sailing and Racing programs, as well as corporate team building and leadership development programs.
When you choose an Offshore Sailing School course, you are embarking on one of the most exciting adventures of your life. Rather than a vacation that ends on the last day, when you learn sailing with Offshore it is the beginning of a whole new lifestyle. Sailing is a passion that founders Steve and Doris Colgate have dedicated their lives to sharing with you. Our No. 1 sailing school will allow you to do what you have always dreamed of doing: learning to sail out on the open water. To learn more, watch this video on our (most popular) Fast Track to Cruising® Course and find out why so many have chosen the sailing lifestyle with Offshore Sailing School.
The Proven Way to Learn to Sail
Olympian and America's Cup sailor, Steve Colgate, is the "knowledge" behind all Offshore Sailing School courses. His best paractices for teaching sailing, the curriculum he developed for every course, and comprehensive textbooks written by the Colgates are just three of the many reasons Offshore Sailing School is America's #1 Sailing School®. A fourth and most important reason is our faculty – professional, highly skilled and experienced men and women who are passionately dedicated to your success. The three ways to learn are worked into every course experience:
- Comprehensive and easy-to-read textbook sent in advance to study - VISUAL
- Classroom sessions preceed each on-water training session to reinforce what you read - AUDITORY
- Extensive on-water instruction allows YOU to practice hands-on what you read and just learned - TACTILE
"In 50 years of teaching sailing at all levels, we have proven you need a minimum of three days of learning to give you the skills and confidence to truly sail well on your own."
Steve Colgate - Offshore Sailing School Founder and Chairman
A sailor since age nine, Steve’s racing career includes America’s Cup Trials, the Pan Am Games, Olympics, TransAtlantic and Fastnet Races. He has completed numerous class championships and international distance races on maxi-ocean racers. Together the Colgates campaigned their 54-foot ocean-racer Sleuth and have enjoyed cruising all over the world.
Steve founded Offshore Sailing School in 1964. Doris joined Steve in 1970 and founded the National Women’s Sailing Association in 1990. Both Steve and Doris actively participate on several national boards and committees, including US Sailing (the governing board of sailing in the United States), Boat US and Sail America. Steve was president of the International Sailing Schools Association from 1997 to 2003.
In 1996, Steve and Doris shared the prestigious Sail Magazine Industry Award for Leadership and in 2003 the US Sailing Timothea Larr Trophy in recognition of their outstanding leadership and excellence in sailing education (shown at left with US Sailing president Jim Muldoon and US Sailing Training Committee Chairman Rich Jepsen).
Doris was awarded the Betty Cook Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award from Boating Magazine and the coveted Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award from Boat US and the National Women’s Sailing Association.
Recently the Colgates received two other coveted awards from The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel (VCB): The Chrysalis Award for Offshore Sailing School's longstanding marketing success; and The Junonia Award for "their tremendous commitment and dedication to the Lee County tourism Industry." Lee County in Southwest Florida is where two of the Colgate Offshore Sailing Schools are located.
